SUSTAINABILITY

We have a strong focus on the environment and sustainability. We work purposefully so that our descendants will also be able to have the same opportunities and conditions as us in the future.

Special recipe for the feed. Purity 2.0 from the fish is 1 Kg. We use algaeoil to ensure a FIFO of less than 1, and that we avoid a number of foreign substances that are found naturally in fish oil. FIFO is a designation for how much raw material from fish is used to produce 1 kg of salmon.

In the WFM standard, there is a requirement to use less than 1 kg of raw material from fish to produce 1 kg of salmon. This is how we ensure sustainability for our production.

There are much higher requirements for the purity of the fish for WFM compared to conventional fish. All raw materials from both fish and plants (Fish oil, fishmeal, rapeseed, sunflower, wheat etc. are cleaned of foreign substances (heavy metals, PCB-like substances, dioxins) before being used in the feed). It is not permitted to use antibiotics in fish that go to WFM. The maximum permitted density in cages is 20 kg fish/m3 water.

In a WFM cage, the maximum permitted biomass is 98% water and 2% fish. (Conventional fish is permitted with 25 kg of fish/m3 of water) Medicinal treatment against lice is not permitted.

The importance of a safe working environment and good practices for the production of salmon

GlobalGAP is an international certification within "Good Agricultural Practice," and this standard helps ensure the quality of production from roe to plate.

It is also part of our chain of custody to ensure food safety from link to link.

We are proud of our first certification and continue to invest in promoting our focus on safe practices within aquaculture. The certification also includes a checklist that takes care of all the workers who work with us to create the product we sell.

We have been certified within Global GAP since 2015

Premium quality deserves premium certification

In 2022, we launched a targeted effort to achieve the prestigious ASC certification. We are convinced that our fish is among the best on the market, and therefore deserves the highest certification. ASC has comprehensive requirements regarding animal welfare, interaction with the natural environment and cooperation with local communities. Carrying the ASC mark symbolizes that we have achieved a first-class status in the market.

In line with ASC's strict standards, we are also actively working to remove the use of heavy metals such as copper in our nuts. We have implemented a special coating that contains neither biocides nor heavy metals. This is part of our commitment to achieve the highest standards in sustainable aquaculture and to preserve the environment so that the next generation will have the same opportunities as us and continue on.

Stingray

In 2022, we started to use lice lasers from Stingray to combat salmon lice, and have a major focus on avoiding de-lice. We have a separate team that works every day to position the lice lasers so that they can work continuously where the fish are placed in the cage.

We are well on our way to a sustainable future

Kleiva Fiskefarm is a pioneering company in the green shift. We have developed infrastructure for shore power for 75% of our fleets. Our fleets are equipped with both batteries and a connection to shore power. The batteries are used to relieve the generators somewhat, while the shore current is used to relieve the generators completely. We are committed to contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from aquaculture. We are well on our way to achieving the government's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from aquaculture by 50% by 2030.

In addition to this, we have invested in two new hybrid boats which will take over for two of our fossil boats. These boats will help to further reduce our emissions. We are also working on various projects to see where we can further save on emissions, for example replacing ropes with velcro solutions and roof nets instead of hamster wheels. These measures will not only reduce the amount of plastic we put in the sea, but also better protect the fish against predators.

In order to get a better overview of our own emissions, we have also adopted the technical solution "aquaculturelog". Among other things, this program keeps an overview of how much plastic we have left in the sea at any given time.
